On the Phone with Dan Aykroyd

My daughter went to a wine store in St. Louis tonight to meet Dan Aykroyd and buy a bottle of his wine. I asked her to put him on the phone with me when she got to the front of the line, and she did. I told him he’d almost gotten me killed 25-30 years ago, when I was driving down Esplanade Avenue in New Orleans and saw him in the window of the Whole Food Company store.  “Oh, my God, there’s Dan Aykroyd!” (I embellished a little.) I wanted him to feel guilty enough to put my daughter in a movie, but I didn’t get that far. I was going to tell him that she’s a great comic actress —  the next Ria Duplantier! “Ria Duplantier?” he would have said. “I’ve never heard of her.” “That’s my daughter, Dan.” I’d have responded. “Some day you will have.”
