Last year, when you received a Ph.D. at Washington University, an honorary degree, there were huge protests. That’s your alma mater. How did you feel about that?

I worked for Phyllis for more than 10 years, beginning with free-lance writing assignments in 1991, then as a full-time editor from 1995-2001. My wife still does occasional free-lance art projects for her. She’s an amazing woman, and I’m proud to know her.
