The John Lewis Story, Over and Over Again

Am I the only person sick and tired of hearing John Lewis retell the story of his one brief moment of alleged heroism 54 years ago? What has he done since, for anyone other than himself?

Here’s his latest milking of that moment, an OFA (Organizing for America, or whatever it’s currently called) email opposing efforts to prevent voter fraud:

Friend —

54 years sounds like a long time ago — but in the context of our movement, it’s only a blink.

It’s only been 54 years since I marched with my brothers and sisters from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

It’s only been 54 years since we were jailed, beaten, and killed for trying to cast a vote. For trying to participate in democracy, in the United States of America.

This isn’t ancient history. It’s the experience of my life.

Just a few decades ago, we changed the course of history and helped pave the way for the Voting Rights Act — but yesterday, this administration put that legacy under attack.

They signed an executive order to start a commission investigating almost non-existent “voter fraud.” It’s nothing more than a cover for them to threaten our progress — with registration barriers, elimination of early and absentee voting, and rules that obstruct an inclusive democracy.

We cannot let this happen.

President Obama likes to say that the arc of the moral universe doesn’t bend on its own — we have to reach up and pull it towards justice ourselves. On that day 54 years ago, we gave it a mighty pull. We can’t let it snap back.

YWP: FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY

franchiseop

Feel free to publish, post, or pass on Your Weekly Politickle by F.R. Duplantier:

FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY
When a voter votes multiple times
And is “punished” for multiple crimes
With a sentence commuted,
Are not others recruited
Likewise to vote multiple times?

From the archive

GRAVE RESPONSIBILITY
Though his body will surely decay,
A dead Democrat’s ballot may stay:
He moves in with the moles,
But remains on the rolls
And continues to vote anyway.
(2012)

NIGHT OF THE VOTING DEAD
“We’ll be summoned from slumberous state
To endorse the quadrennial slate;
Then it’s back to the grave,
Where we’ll try to behave
‘Til another electoral date!”
(2004)

REGISTERED VOTERS
The polls open and who comes in?
Mary Poppins and Mickey Finn,
Then Betty Boop
And Alley Oop,
Sherlock Holmes and Gunga Din!
(2004)

TWO-DAY ELECTION?
To ensure that the balloting may
Proceed in an orderly way:
On Tuesday, please note,
All Republicans vote –
And all Democrats on the next day.
(2002)

WINNING BY A WHISKER
“Our Party is poised to prevail
With this new registration by mail:
All corpses and cats
Are staunch Democrats,
So our candidates simply can’t fail!”
(1998)

ROCK THE VOTE (TO SLEEP)
If free markets are something you dread,
Our Constitution is over your head,
And American history
To you is a mystery,
On election day, please, stay in bed!
(1998)

Last week’s limerick

CONTAGION
It’s not spread by mosquitoes or fleas,
Nor dispersed by a cough or a sneeze,
It’s communicated by
The half-witted and sly:
The political kind of disease.

Vote Fraud: A Democratic Party Phenomenon

McGinty

Two years ago (April 12, 2012), I posted this classic vote-fraud scene from The Great McGinty on the Facebook page of the American Civil Rights Union. Lots of other clips from the movie — and the entire film — are still available on Youtube, but not this scene by itself. Gee, I wonder whom it offended, or frightened. (Just for the record, vote fraud has been an overwhelmingly Democratic phenomenon for at least 100 years.)

Self-Fulfilling Polls?

Already Democratic operatives are paving the way for a challenge to the presidential election results. Their talking point is that their polls show that Barack Obama has the votes to win the presidency and if he loses, it has to be on account of voter fraud. — Steve Elwart

This explains the skewing of polls in Obama’s favor with bad samples (e.g., registered versus likely voters). It’s a set-up for the coming challenge.

Protect Your Vote!

As Americans, our most precious civil right is our right to vote and to have our vote count. All of our other constitutional rights depend on this.

But today, that right is under siege by forces out to weaken and destroy our ability to hold free and fair elections. If we lose confidence in our electoral process, it will spell the end of America’s 236-year experiment as a self-governing republic. — American Civil Rights Union

The Year of Massive Vote Fraud

The most consequential election in our lifetime is still 10 months away, but it’s clear from the Obama administration’s order halting South Carolina’s new photo ID law that the Democrats already have brought a gun to a knife fight.

How else to describe this naked assault on the right of a state to create minimal requirements to curb voter fraud? — Robert Knight

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. claims Jim Crow is returning. In a recent speech, Mr. Holder said that attempts by states to pass voter identification laws will disenfranchise minorities, rolling back the clock to the evil days of segregation. He said that a growing number of minorities fear that “the same disparities, divisions and problems” now afflict America as they did in 1965 prior to the Voting Rights Act. According to the Obama administration, our democracy is being threatened by racist Republicans. Hence, the Justice Department must prevent laws requiring a photo ID to vote from being enacted. — Jeffrey Kuhner

ACORN & Our Gangster President

Are Mickey Mouse and Mary Poppins registered to vote in Nevada? In a Las Vegas courtroom last week, prosecutors found the fictional characters not guilty but convicted those impersonating them of voter fraud. The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), the radical left-wing activist group, was convicted in a massive voter-fraud conspiracy. It has been committing identify theft for decades. — Matthew Vadum
